Features

The organic matter in wastewater is degraded and converted to methane and carbon dioxide by anoxic and anaerobic bacteria by acidogenisis and methanogenesis. In acidogenesis stage, acidogenic bacteria convert complex organic matter into simple compounds such as volatile fatty acids (i.e. acetate, propionate, butyrate, and lactate), alcoholic compounds (i.e. ethanol and methanol), ammonia, hydrogen and carbon dioxide by specific enzyme. These intermediates are further converted into methane and carbon dioxide by methanogens.
