Electrodialysis Reversal Treatment Technology

Introduction

Electrodialysis (ED) is a separation process of different salt ions using ion-exchange membranes, and the driving force of ion movement is applied DC electric potential. Under the applied electric potential, anions are moving toward anode and cations toward cathode, and thus the diluate and concentrate solution can be gathered. Electrodialysis reversal (EDR) is another configuration of ED. It applies the periodical reversal of polarity to reverse the ion flow and then the fouling is cleaned and thus the life of membranes can be extended.

EDR is mostly used in the brackish water desalination, river and underground water treatment and the regeneration of industrial water. The membranes used in ED have better physical properties, chemical resistance and colloid and bacteria tolerance than in RO.

The advantages of EDR are:

  1. Low operation cost
  2. Low water use
  3. High loading, high efficiency and high stability.
  4. Low wastewater production
  5. Low installation cost

Application

  1. Water softening
  2. Non water source of drinking water (Ex: underground water) treatment
  3. Wastewater recycle
